About us

St. Ashworth Temple Church of God in Christ (COGIC) formerly know as Wooster Avenue Temple COGIC was founded by Bishop C.A. Ashworth. The church officially began its services in 1937 when Elder Ashworth came from Shreveport, Louisiana to Cleveland, Ohio. Inspired by God, he moved to Akron and became the shepherd of the flock, joined by several devoted members.

Under Elder Ashworth's leadership, the church grew rapidly. In 1944, the congregation moved from their initial location at 793 Rhodes Avenue to a larger property at 355 Wooster Avenue, which they named Wooster Avenue Temple. The church paid off its mortgage in 1955, a significant milestone celebrated with joy.

As the church's membership continued to increase, plans were made for a new building. In 1977, a groundbreaking ceremony was held at 1086 Wooster Avenue, and the congregation moved into the new structure in 1978. The church was eventually renamed St. Ashworth Temple in honor of Bishop Ashworth.

Following Bishop Ashworth's death in 1991, the church has had three additional Senior Pastors: Elder Louis C. Walker, who served from 1991 - 2008; Elder Richard A. Bradford, who was appointed Assistant Pastor in 1996 and later served as Senior Pastor until retiring in  2015; and the current Pastor, Elder Robert E. DeJournett, who has been leading the church since December 2015.

St. Ashworth Temple COGIC has a rich history of growth and dedication, continuing to serve the community and worship God under the guidance of its committed leaders.  (click her for complete Historical Account)
